The HP Mini 100e Education Edition netbook is Hewlett-Packards (NYSE:HPQ) latest addition to its Mini netbook lineup. The entry level netbook has been designed for young school kids that are primarily between kindergarten and grade six. As this age group may not be the most gentle with their gadgets, HP has added some rugged features that will allow the netbook to withstand a small beating.
The Mini 100e comes with a heavy duty plastic chassis with steel pins and a spill resistant keyboard. There is also a non-removable carrying handle that allows for easy mobility but keeps with HPs philosophy of few removable parts which prevents accessories from being lost or broken. In addition to broadband network support, the 100e also comes with an integrated modem that allows for use in remote areas or in emerging nations where high speed internet may not be readily available or affordable.
Under the hood, the 100e has a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N455 processor, 1GB DDR3 RAM, 160GB hard disk drive, VGA, mic and headphone jacks. The 10.1-inch 1024×600 pixel resolution netbook will also have a webcam and a choice of battery (4.5 hour or 8.5 hour). The base price for this device with Windows 7 Starter Edition is $300 and we should start to see it launch globally in early July.
