The Apple iPhone is an “iWitness” For The Police
In the fight against crime, law enforcement officials have used technology as a means of getting a one up on criminals. Police have relied on phone records as a means of tracking activity as they recreate the events leading up to a crime and with smartphones, police have even more digital data including email messages and text messages that can be used to solve crimes.
There is now an area of forensic study that focuses just on the Apple iPhone and using its data (GPS information, GEO tagged pictures, browser history, screenshots of opened maps) in solving crimes. Part of the reason why this data is so valuable is because “very few people” know how to effectively erase data from their smartphone. Of the major phone players, the iPhone is said to be one of the easier ones from which to extract information from. The RIM BlackBerry is on the other side of the spectrum and it’s believed that Android phones will lend themselves to a forensic investigation.
